So, as you may have seen from an earlier email I have had the dreaded rear end "clunk" in my TR6. So put the car on stands and set about investigating. Found: 1) worn driveshaft splines. 2) missing washers on shock bushes. 3) front passenger side diff mount with signs of previous welded repair. 4) front diff carrier with signs of previous. Alex_GT. I stated before about clunk noise when going forward after being driven in reverse. Same sound when going reverse after being driven forward. It happens usually on strong starts and even after waiting on red light. Forum recommended to check flexplates and transmission, after extensive diagnostic on the lift, all flex plates looks great.

There are a few sections that target very specific components in the valve body that can cause clunks between gears: lockup control valve, lockup solenoid, regulator valve, shift pressure solenoid, and the line pressure solenoid. I can get all of the solenoids refurbished for under $100. There is a needle bearing that is impossible to get that is behind that seal the snub first goes through on the differential. 2. Clearance increase from wear of the ring and pinion gear in the differential. Be careful when tightening or loosening. Not enough and too much clearance will make things much worse.

The clunk was still there in the low gears on downshifting. Dealer confirmed with Stellantis and ultimately they put in a new trans and torque converter. I have driven it a 100 miles or so and the shifting is noticeably better. I still have a slight clunk between 4th and 3rd gears but no where near what it was before. I haven't actually logged the trans gears to see if it does a "garage" shift at normal operating temps when shifting from drive to reverse to neutral. The clunk and sound is also audible when shifting into neutral from a gear which is weird as well. I'm pretty sure at low temperatures and high idle it does a "garage" shift where it shifts into. It makes a scraping noise at low speeds, out of gear and noticeable noise when coasting in 3rd around 50 kph and at 4th going 60kph. Took it to the guy that did my suspension, said it was the heat shield. We would inspect the drive shaft and u-joints first off... It's common for a u-joint to make this noise and being that you cant lube them any more, it will need replaced if suspected is bad. Also we would check the fluid level and condition of the rear end lube but the u joints are by far the most common reason for this. My car clunks ever since I got the IRS swapped into it.
